10 weeks of PSEAD

I did a BA in Art Education in China, however the academy changed its name to Fine Art. In China, the classifications of art are more traditional, we have got different majors like: oil painting, Chinese painting, Chinese calligraphy, sculpture, and experimental art. Fortunately, my courses included most of the basic practices of these majors I mentioned. However, it was very difficult to communicate with different tutors from the other disciplines, not to mention the people from outside of the industry. Then I realized that also exhibition is a tool of art education for the public, however, there are no curation courses at universities in China. That is the main reason why I chose UCA.

The PSEAD course has been a great transition period between my bachelor course and master course. Through the 10 weeks pre-sessional English courses, I have changed a lot of studying habits. First of all, mostly form of Chinese students studying is tutor center, however, I know how to do independent research, which helped me build my confidence. Secondly, I never tried group work in art before. As you know, art contains lots of disciplines. From now on, I could use critique thinking to accept a diversity of different opinions. Thirdly, I improved my writing academic skills and it will be essential to me during my main course.

The question that I wish to investigate in my master course is based around the theme of contemporary art. As an independent curator, I propose to investigate the role of installation and video art in public education system direction. I want to explore the unique effects of other original performances. I wish to investigate the connections between art system and agency as well as installation as a multidimensional performance, and what it brings to plastic art. Video is a multi-sensory manifestation that has attracted by visual and sound. This area of study crosses into many types of artistic practice and theory.

Project4---London trip

Think, Design, Experiment, Make!

(Hall of Design Museum)
We went to The Design Museum and Tate Modern on the London trip last Friday. Personally, I prefer Tate Modern to The Design Museum because it is focused on the concept of contemporary artworks, however, the other museum is more about materials and brands. As a designer, you could get lots of information from The Design Museum; as a curator or a fine art student, the concept is the most important element in an artwork, the consciousness we got will help us in further investigation. However, the curatorial style in The Design Museum had a crisp visual impact.

Maker

In 21st century, techniques of science are familiar with public. The technological revolution brought great progress of 'made by hands'.
The film 'maker' record that people from different age groups showed their creativity with the help of professional technical tools. They prefer created things by numerous materials and technique to bought them from shops.
Last week, my friend told me that her peers in Tsinghua University made a 3-D printing by themselves. Personally, I think create by hands has a great value of incite their creativeness.

research about interactive installation

                                                   ( Let's Get to know)
We used for reference of interactive installation to achieve the purpose of communicate with audiences. Interactive art is a form of art that allows the art to achieve its purpose. Some interactive art installations achieve this by letting the observer or visitor ‘walk’ in, on, and around them; some others ask the artist to become part of the artwork. Such as Daniel Rozin’s work ‘Let’s Get To Know Each Other’, viewers see reflections of themselves and their surrounds as well as views through the glass. The audience becomes part of sculpture.

Project 7.2

'Project 7.2' is an interactive installation which symbolizes the seven continents. It aims to raise the awareness of some of the global issues what are contemporary society faces. We believe that original people is pure and undifferentiated, people be classification by educated, culture and political. But all of those conflicts in the world are due to these differences between ethnics and nations if people can realize what common we are, maybe people have more opportunities to face the global issues we have.

The viewpoint of people would move from global issues to personal problems by entering the inside structure and looking at their own figures on the dark glass wall. Accordingly, they would realize that they come to the starting point of those global issues and think the meanings. Moreover, they would notice the existence of others and the awareness would lead to the re-recognition of oneself, others and its relationships, and also lead to a new understanding of the meaning of this word. We are convinced that this interactive installation would bring an important rule to people for reviewing modern society with impact and give opportunities to change the consciousness.

In this project, we would like to choose the individual as main theme, and land in the earth is the source of the ideal. We aim to do this by connecting global issues between personal communications from different places and waving this together with installation‘7.2’. The proposal will be given due consideration to think about that human’s life is influenced by various factors, putting away these things to deeply discover the depth of our individual is the same with each other. Finally, we expect ‘7.2’ would affect viewers.

Introduction of 'project 7.2'

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela said that the road we have walked has been built by the contribution of all of us; the tools we have used on the road have been fashioned by all of us; the future we face is that of all of us (UN). Our proposal argues that the functions of art can break the barriers of geographical and cultural differences. We made an interactive installation to underpin the concept of equality and diversity. The title of the proposal is ‘Project 7.2’ which represents the current number of people living on Earth – 2010 (UN).

AiWW

Personally, I don't think it is a proper film to watch at public for international students from different cultures. As you know, most of countries in the world have come through wars and natural disasters, especially in a big country with 1300millions of citizens. China is a developing country with a high speed, so there are many problems need to handled.

Actually, AiWeiWei is a very close friend of my tutor( QinGa ) in MinZu University of China. They have participated in lots of exhibitions such as 'Fuck off'. So I know his exhibitions more than the content that the film showed. He is a kind person with unique creativity. Also ZhaoZhao and I were friends on Micro-blog who always taking the camera in the film.  It is a very small group in Contemporary Art in China.

For art students, it was forbidden that making any artworks relate to politics and sex in my university. I can't be denied is that Aiweiwei is a brave artist; he could against the most powerful government in the world. As ordinary people, we almost live in a peaceful environment. About activism, what makes art spiritual is artists' confidence of changing world by art. Just like AiWeiWei did.
